Inhomogeneous Flows of Complex Fluids: Mechanical Instability Versus Non-Equilibrium Phase Transition

چکیده
We briefly review and re-interpret recent experiInental results on shear-induced inhoInogeneous flows in coInplex fluids. These are usually explained in terIns of aInechanical instability of the non-linear flow regiIne. However, in at least two respects, the robustness of the two-state banded-flow regiIne and the kinetics of band forInation under shear, they present striking analogies with ordinary field-induced phase transitions in equilibriuIn systeIns. We propose a phenoInenological explanation of these effects in terIns of an effective non-equilibriuIn potential that accounts for the free energy stored in a viscoelastic material under steady-shear conditions. Within this picture, a shear-thinning non-hoInogeneous flow can be shown to be a Inanifestation of soIne underlying hidden structural transition.

Cancellation of Vorticity in Steady-state Non-isentropic Flows of Complex Fluids
In steady-state non-isentropic flows of perfect fluids there is always thermodynamic generation of vorticity when the difference between the product of the temperature with the gradient of the entropy and the gradient of total enthalpy is different from zero. We note that this property does not hold in general for complex fluids for which the prominent influence of the material substructure on ...
متن کاملApproximation of Liquid-Vapor Phase Transition for Compressible Fluids with Tabulated EOS
This Note investigates the approximation of phase change in compressible fluids with complex equation of state (EOS). Assuming a local and instantaneous equilibrium with respect to phasic pressures, temperatures and chemical potentials when both phases are present leads to the classical definition of an equilibrium EOS for the two-phase medium. Unfortunately, there is no explicit expression of ...
متن کاملEquilibrium Phases in a Energy- Relative enstrophy Statistical Mechanics Model of Barotropic Flows on a Rotating Sphere —– non- conservation of angular momentum
The statistical equilibrium of barotropic flows on a rotating sphere is simulated in a wide range of parameter space by Monte-Carlo methods. A spin-lattice Hamiltonian with a canonical constraint on the kinetic energy and a microcanonical constraint on the relative enstrophy is formulated as a convergent family of finite dimensional approximations of the barotropic vortex statistic on the rotat...
متن کاملLight Scattering and Rheology of Complex Fluids Driven far from Equilibrium
In these lectures, we explore two examples of systems driven far from equilibrium by the application of shear. With these two examples, we investigate different experimental strategies which are designed to directly probe the connection between macroscopic non-linear rheology and the microscopic structure and dynamics of a broad range of soft materials. The study of these systems illustrate the...
متن کاملDensity Functional Theory for Studies of Multiple States of Inhomogeneous Fluids at Solid Surfaces and in Pores
Two new versions of the density functional theory (DFT), which correspond to the canonical ensemble and the Gibbs ensemble respectively, are applied to study multiple equilibrium states and associated hysteresis on examples of capillary condensation of argon in nanopores of MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieves and Kr adsorption on carbon. The canonical ensemble DFT (CEDFT) allows us to trace not ...
